Resume Roast for Underwriters

Underwriter resumes are judged on book performance, authority level, and turnaround, which is convenient because underwriting is the same skill. Reviewed applications and assessed risk is the job description restated. The reviewer wants your line, like P and C, life, mortgage, commercial, your approval authority, your monthly file count, and how your book performed against loss expectations. Those four facts are the interview.

What Gabe checks first on a Underwriter resume
  • Name your line and authority, like commercial P and C with binding authority to 2 million. Authority level is the fastest seniority signal in the field.
  • Give throughput as actually measured: files per month and turnaround time against SLA. Speed with clean files is what desks are staffed around.
  • Cite book performance, like loss ratio 8 points under plan across three years. An underwriter without portfolio results is asking to be taken on faith.
Worth knowing

Referred candidates are roughly 40 times more likely to reach an interview than cold applicants. (referral-to-interview research)
