Resume Roast for Data Engineers

Data Engineer resumes get scanned for pipelines and volume, in that order. The recruiter wants to know what data you moved, how much of it, and whether the thing you built stayed standing. A wall of tools, like Spark, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, says you attended the same conferences as everyone else. Terabytes per day and pipeline uptime say you did the job.

What Gabe checks first on a Data Engineer resume
  • State volume and frequency: rows, terabytes, events per day. A pipeline that moves 2 TB nightly is a different job than one moving spreadsheets.
  • Describe one data-quality save, like a dedupe or a schema fix that ended silent bad numbers downstream. That is the war story hiring managers probe.
  • Name who consumed your data: analysts, models, dashboards, executives. A pipeline with no named customer sounds like it ran for its own benefit.
